Undead Labs’ State of Decay 2 is one of the most anticipated upcoming Xbox One games at the moment- and the developer is doing its best to live up to the limelight it has been thrust in, specifically by going bigger and better in every possible way.

One of those ways is the playable area in game- State of Decay 2 will apparently launch with three maps, as opposed to the original game’s single map. What’s more, each of these maps will be the same size as the map in the original game, meaning you essentially get three times the playable area.

But it’s more than just size- each map will also have different environments, calling for different survival strategies, and different mission types. “It really feels like you’re moving from one small town to another,” community director Sanya Weathers said in a blog post on the official site, “and creates a tremendous sense of immersion. And perhaps counter-intuitively, it makes the world feel even bigger. You know how on one map (even one three times the size as the original game’s) the longer you play, the more you start feeling deju vu with every mission? That’s less of an issue with separate maps.”

I think this is one of those games where the larger size can actually work to its advantage, and to the benefit of its gameplay mechanics- as Weathers explains herself. I am eager to see just how well utilized this extra space will be. State of Decay 2 will launch exclusively on Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs this year.
