Dishonored: Death of the Outsider was announced recently at Bethesda’s E3 press event, a stand-alone game similar to what Naughty Dog are doing with Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. And Bethesda have promised that the game will be a great entry point to the series for people who’ve never played a Dishonored game before. That said, the game will also have a lot of things, such as locations (and characters, of course), that will be familiar to those who’ve played Dishonored 2.

“You do revisit some spots in Karnaca,” said Arkane boss Harvey Smith in an interview. “But there are also new locations, and there are some locations that are revisited but have changed heavily also. Daud is kind of an older figure in this game, he’s near the end of his life, it’s fifteen years later. And Billie is the protagonist, as I said.”

He then went on to say that Death of the Outsider was going to be a standalone, and it will serve as a serviceable entry point into the series even for those who haven’t played the previous two games. “It’s a standalone,” he continued. “That’s one important feature about it. You don’t have to have Dishonored or Dishonored 2 to play Death of the Outsider.”

He was then asked if making “standalone” adventures was starting to become a little bit of a trend, and Smith agreed that maybe that was true. “Yeah, it’s interesting,” he said, “but it leads to all kinds of fascinating stuff. Like what if this was someone’s entry point to the Dishonored series? They’ve never played any of it and then they go and play as Billie Lurk. It’s a standalone adventure, it’s a little shorter than a full release. It’s priced at $29.99. But it is conceivable that some people will pick it up and it will be the first time that they’ve played a Dishonored game. Badass supernatural assassin, sneaking and killing, jumping from rooftop to rooftop using magic and weapons to take down corrupt, aristocratic faction leaders.”

Death of the Outsider, by its very nature of what kind of a game it is, will undoubtedly attract a lot of players, both those who have played Dishonored 2 and those who haven’t. There’s no denying that in concept, it looks very interesting. You can watch its reveal trailer here. Stay tuned for continued coverage.
